🎤 Featured Keynote Speaker: Joachim LĂ©pine
Joachim Lépine, M.Ed., is an educator and keynote speaker who has coached hundreds of introverted entrepreneurs to grow successful businesses. His passion for marketing and sales comes from personal experience: as a person with social anxiety, he developed his own authentic, aligned, and introvert-friendly strategies to build two prosperous businesses from the ground up.
He founded his first business, LION Translations, in the late 2000s, and co-founded LION Translation Academy, a professional development platform for translators, in 2022.
Today, Joachim is a proud dad, dog owner, and course creator dedicated to helping introverted service providers and entrepreneurs grow thriving businesses by building trust—not funnels. At the CTTIC Calgary 2025 Conference, he will share his unique perspective on building sustainable careers in translation and interpreting while staying true to your personality and values.

🎤 Speaker: Roula Salam
Roula Salam is an ATIA certified Arabic-English translator. She was past president of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta (ATIA) for two mandates, is currently on the board on the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC) and is the Vice President of the International Federation of Translators (FIT).
She is a lecturer at the English Language School, Faculty of Education, University of Alberta (2012 – present) and holds a PhD degree in Postcolonial Studies from Queen’s University.
Presentation: Navigating a Changing Landscape: AI and the ethics of translation AI has profoundly impacted our professions and our lives, from changing the way we conduct research and analyze data to diagnosing medical treatments, enhancing education, and improving our work efficiency. Undoubtedly, AI has also transformed the way translators and interpreters work. In the field of translation, interpretation, and terminology, AI tools have made simple tasks much easier and help provide quick access to information in many languages. However, linguists are facing a growing uncertainty: Will linguists, translators, and interpreters be replaced by AI? How does AI impact our profession, and will translators, terminologists and interpreters remain relevant in the future? This talk will focus on the ethical question of AI in the field and discuss the urgent need for us to rethink our strategies and roles as we navigate this new horizon. The discussion will draw on her own ideas and some of the research and important discussions shared at the FIT World Congress 2025 held at the World Intellectual Property Organization Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

🎤 Speaker: Betty Cohen
Betty Cohen is President of the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec (OTTIAQ). Very active in the profession since the start of her career, she has always been an advocate of the language professions. She was President of the Société des traducteurs du Québec (STQ) when it became OTTIAQ in 1992. She was also Treasurer and then President of the International Federation of Translators from 1996 to 2005.
A certified translator specializing in finance, her career took her from salaried to freelance translator, to partner in charge of language services for a major accounting firm. In 2020, she decided to devote herself to her favourite activity: passing on knowledge. She currently offers training and consultancy services in translation and translation management. At the CTTIC Calgary 2025 Conference, she will present her perspective on the future of translation, interpreting, and terminology in light of AI and the current economic climate.

🎤 Speaker: Silvia XalabardĂ©
Silvia XalabardĂ© is a professional translator and interpreter working in English, Spanish, German, and Italian. She serves as Chair of the Certification Examinations Board at CTTIC, where she plays a key role in overseeing Canada’s national certification exams. 2023Annual General Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia, November 2 to 4, 2023

CTTIC’s successful 2023 Annual General Meeting took place in rainy (with occasional patches of sunshine) Vancouver this year. A total of 15 delegates met in person and two more joined us via Zoom, representing all seven member societies. All the photos below were taken at the STIBC office during our meetings, although we did enjoy a couple of delicious dinners outside.

On Thursday evening, we delighted in the cultural experience of the Afghan Horsemen Restaurant, while on Friday evening, extremely tasty Canadian turf and surf were on the menu at the Boathouse Restaurant on Kitsilano Beach.

Special thanks to STIBC for letting us use their meeting room, Executive Director, Jean-Philippe, for organizing the catering and more, and Angela L. for the additional office assistance! Kudos too to SIlvia and Trang for providing transportation to the restaurants.

Why not consider joining our board? Our next AGM is planned for November 2024 in Ontario, thanks to our hosts, ATIO!

2022Annual General Meeting in Halifax, Nova Scotia, November 3 to 6, 2022

After two years of virtual AGMs due to Covid and travel restrictions, well … our photos say it all! Thank you to ATINS for hosting us on a perfect, sunny weekend, with unseasonal temperatures close to 20 degrees Celsius, while other places in Canada to the West of us were experiencing winter snow storms! And Nova Scotia, wow! What colour! Delicious meals! And chairs galore for us to enjoy, to network or even sunbathe!
